Heather Henderson is returning to Nowhere, Texas. Not because of her father's death (he was a main cause of her adolescent trouble) nor her inheritance of a dilapidated feed store, though each gives her a legitimate excuse to go home. She's going home because of Royce McKinnon. To find out why he pushed her out of his life three years earlier, and to push her way back into it if possible.
Royce was there for Heather when her father wasn't. Practically from the moment her mother picked up and left town. He saw her through much of her teenage angst and rebellion, and often with a seemingly heavy hand.
As mayor of a very small town, and owner of a ranch, the responsibilities weigh on him. Responsibilities, which he takes very seriously. Along with his own responsibilities he takes on others, such as Heather's, to her aggravation. He has a hard time seeing she's an adult, capable of making decisions, right or wrong. And he holds on to that like a shield as his desire for her grows by leaps and bounds.
Heather has to fight Royce with every decision she makes. She has a hard time making him see her as a woman, much less a woman who loves him. But she makes progress even when the problems mount up, even when she makes decisions he really, really doesn't like. Eventually his eyes are opened, but it may be too late.
From time to time I had a problem with Royce. He was too controlling, too rigid in his views. As if he was the only one who knew best no matter the situation. It was a little way into the book before reasons became clear. But through it all, I did sense his heart was in the right place.
Heather was a help in smoothing the way, in helping me get to know Royce. She was able to break through some of the barriers to help not only me, but Royce as well, see what was behind the inflexibility. I really enjoyed Heather. She had a great energy about her that was contagious. Her thought process was fun to witness and be a part of.
Heather and Royce fit together like hand to a glove. Their differences became secondary to their love once the blinders fell off. Their differences seemed to enhance and sensitize their love.
All in all, Homeward Bound was a very pleasurable read. Marin Thomas has a bright future ahead of her. She writes with wit, sparkle, and panache. Her style is nothing short of unique and fresh.
