Dear Readers,
For many years, Ashish and his family worked in the fields that belonged to the Lal Family. The reason for this was a very small debt owed by one family to the other. When Ashish reached his 50's he was considered too old to perform his duties and it was a huge effort for him to keep going for his family which included his one and only daughter, Shridula. They had given her this name which means "Blessings. " Ashish said to his daughter, "Perhaps the name will bring you more fortune than it brought me."
As all this family ever did was work, they did not know of the animosity and hate for the British by the Indians or of the fight for independence that was heating up throughout the country. Ashish wife passed away but, he still had four sons to help him in his work. Sometimes Ahridula worked in the fields but, she also cooked and cleaned for the family. Finally a countrywide revolt brought independence and it brought many changes to the Ashish and Lal families.
This is the 2nd book in a series "Blessings in India," the first being "The Faith of Ashish." I know very little about India in the 1940's and the struggles that families had to go through just to make a living for their families. It was a real eye-opener and history lesson for me and I am glad that I read it. It is interesting to know how people lived in other parts of the world and unfortunately, the Caste System is probably still alive and thriving in some countries.
