Yank Morgan has been left to raise three pre-teen girls after the death of their parents. That would be enough to scare any man. However, even worse than their teen years, are their adult years and how he wants to help them. Each of the girls has gone into his business, "The Hot Zone", with him as publicist for sports figures. While the older two girls seem to know how to be women of the world, his youngest charge seems determined to be "one of the guys". That is until she met Damian Fuller.

Micki Jordan decides that she is ready to be a woman and approaches her sisters as to how to get it done. While there are a few bumps in the path, all in all, it turns out being a woman isn’t as hard as she might have thought. In fact, there can be some real perks to it especially as Damian begins to take notice.

Damian Fuller is a baseball player who is nearing the end of his career. He had never really given much thought to what he would do after his career ended but it appears that now is the time to start thinking about it. Along with struggling with his career, he is also dealing with an injury that won’t heal (which is part of why retirement is looming) and one of the women he thought would be no big deal is now saying he is going to be a father.

The only person Damian can think to go to with his troubles is Micki because she understands jocks. However, he is in for a bit of a surprise when he discovers Micki is more than he bargained for.

Carly Phillips has tackled an interesting "arena" with Hot Number. While baseball isn’t my cup of tea (I’ve always been a football fan, hint hint, Carly), I do find it very interesting that a woman has based a romance around sports. I think in many ways sports and true romance has been seen as a wasteland because after all sports can only involve one night stands, right? Carly proves with this story there can be more. As humans we can’t be lumped into just one category and Hot Number illustrates this truth with romance stories as well.

Now I have to admit since I am not into baseball there were a few times I got off track but the story line is very plausible and yet fun. She found ways to pull a variety of emotions into play from concern for Micki to laughter over Yank and his antics as the patriarch of the family. Hot Number is well written and easily read – a great book to pass a few hours with.
