Anne is a single, 24-year-old paralegal who is haunted by an inscription she finds in a book written by a woman with the same name. Impelled to discover the tale behind the mysteriously sad words she unearths a decades old murder, power gone awry and a story of broken hearts.
First of all, I really ended up enjoying this book. Mr. Peters writes a good story. However, I need to be up front and say it’s not the style that I would choose to read normally. Mr. Peters writes a very cerebral mystery including a detailed storyline. I found the first third of the book to be very slow reading and difficult to process. I’m not used to reading a mystery where I have to find the clues myself. I’m waiting for the characters to discover the clues for me. I had to re-read a lot of the book until I caught onto the style and adjusted. After that, I enjoyed the book and thought it moved along until the end.
For any history buffs out there, this is a great book for you. Mr. Peters wraps into the year 2004 a mystery that dates back to 1939 in England. It was unique to see the start of World War II from the British perspective. Mr. Peters does point out that while the characters and some situations are based on reality, the story is fictitious.
Anne is a modern girl-next-door. She reminds me of several of my own friends. She’s got the Midwest thought pattern that often leaves me in stitches since I’m a Midwest girl myself. However, I have to say I admired the grit she showed throughout the book as things begin to happen. She really grew as a person throughout the course of the book and I found that to be one of the best things in the story. It’s rare when we get to see a character make a major transformation in the course of one story.
When she meets Jarred, it begins to really twist the story. There’s intrigue and the "spark" of attraction between them. Will it end as quickly as it began? Will it develop into more? I pondered the two of them a lot as they worked on their professional and personal relationship.
Overall, I think Mr. Peters has put together an airtight mystery. I couldn’t find loopholes like I do in some other books. I thought it wound down and gave enough closure to the characters and situations so I didn’t feel like I had been left hanging. I don’t want to give any of the mystery away, but I will let you know that the story takes many twists and turns on the way. I was never sure of the outcome and it was never boring or predictable. Mr. Peters kept me on my toes right on down to the last page. He ends with a teaser for the sequel, which I understand he is currently writing.
