Marsha Sullivan is a woman trying to move on after accepting the death of her husband. She still misses him everyday but knows that it is time to become a ‘single’ woman again. By ‘single,’ I don’t mean a dating woman out looking for a husband but a woman living alone and attempting to make sense of her life. To that end, Marsha decides to visit the cottage they had purchased long ago on Beaver Island. She even convinces her sister, Barb, to come with her.
As she takes her first tour of downtown, Marsha finds herself reminiscing about past visits here with Don and especially when Don’s brother, Jeff, and his wife, Marilou, joined them. What fun the two couples used to have. Just as she is smiling and thinking about the past, but who should appear as she looks up. Jeff is at the island with his daughter, Bonnie. Jeff lost his wife, Marilou, a few years back so he is also struggling to find his new life. His effort is complicated by Bonnie. He loves his daughter dearly but being a single parent to a disabled child can be very tough.
Marsha helps Jeff find some new inroads with Bonnie while Jeff helps Marsha find some new inroads to just being Marsha. All in all, a pretty fair trade as they begin to cement their new lives as individuals. Once that is done, can they find new lives together?
Gail’s books are always an excellent read and In His Dreams is no different. This one, however, struck such a nerve in me because I am a lot like Marsha. I want to fix things for people and yet there is just a bit of her sister, Barb, in me as well with a hidden hurt.
Gail’s characters are very real and relating to them happens without even thinking about it—it just sort of happens. You will find your heart talking to Marsha and telling her not to try so hard. Your heart will talk to Jeff and say be just a bit stronger and your heart will cheer with Bonnie over every achievement she makes during our time with them.
In His Dreams is truly a spiritual pick me up. I always look forward to her next book and this one truly doesn’t disappoint.
