Jenny's life is changed when as a young girl she sees a merboy injured and on land. Jenny tries to help the boy before a terrifying merman appears and drags him away. Jenny feels a connection to the boy, and ever since has been looking for merpeople, unconsciously looking for her merboy. Perrin, the merboy, is even more affected by his meeting with Jenny. His connection with Jenny, in the long run, causes trouble for Perrin and he is exiled from his people and the sea. Perrin has survived eight traumatic years among the humans, but now, must return to the sea and try to stop the devastation, which his visions foretells.
In the Dark of Dreams is a hard book for me to review because while I did enjoy it, it is hard to get into. The story is sometimes told in a dream-like, disjointed way, which makes it rather confusing in the beginning. While I enjoy tortured heroes, Perrin is almost too tortured. In order to survive, Perrin has been forced to do things that he considers reprehensible. He has come through these trials scarred, physically and mentally, but still very much in love with Jenny. Jenny, too, has overcome some serious struggles, among them a dangerous, dysfunctional family and a very traumatic loss in her past. Despite all of this, Jenny is a very worthy heroine who doesn't wait around to be saved. These two make a great couple, who work well together. To top all of this, the ending is exciting, action-packed, and well worth the wait.
Overall, In the Dark of Dreams is an enjoyable paranormal romance, which may take a while to jell with the reader.
