When Gilbert Delvecchio approaches private investigator Rona Shively to find someone, Rona instinctively knows everything is not as it seems. First off the man she is asked to look for was biologically a woman and thugs from the local crime scene seem to be involved. Is this something she wants to get caught up in?

But like the tough private eye she is, Rona takes the case and tries to track down Luther Janetti. His past is complicated and murky and so many people try to get in her way. People are chasing Rona and threatening her and those she loves. Who can she trust? Who isn’t being paid off by someone else? And why all of a sudden is her neighbor, Charlie, getting all up close and personal with her? She doesn’t even like her mealy mouthed neighbor.

I completely identified with Rona in the first paragraph. She is not a sweet character. She is a tough broad who speaks her mind and carries a gun she isn’t afraid to use. She is actually tougher than the men in her life. Her best friend Norm is the perfect foil for her. He is sweet and protective, whilst Rona is the complete opposite. I enjoyed how their relationship evolved. As far Charlie, I had no idea what his intentions were until the end. I liked that as I kept wondering what was going on. But a lot of the characters and their motivations are like that in this book.

The only thing about In The Wash I had trouble with was at the start when a lot of character names got thrown at me and I had to keep them all straight so I knew who was involved with who. However this was only a monetary thing and everything gets wrapped up nicely in the end.

In The Wash is like a 1930’s film noir detective story that had a modern, edgy twist and a female lead. Nothing and no one is as it seems. It’s a crime story, a thriller and a romance. Obviously this is part of a series on Rona. She is a real life warts and all heroine that pulls no punches. I would certainly read on to find out about her further adventures and what she does about Norm.
