Brett Kavanaugh is the owner of The Painted Lady. It’s an upscale tattoo shop located on the Vegas Strip. Her shop is famous for doing only custom tattoos. One of her most recent clients was Dee Carmichael, lead singer of hot new pop group called the Flamingos. Brett has done all of Dee’s tattoos and they have been only done in black outlines. Dee is allergic to the dye in tattoo ink and has always been scared to do any color to her many tattoos. Brett has always been accommodating in Dee’s wish and has come up with great tattoos.
Looking at the news one morning, Brett hears of Dee’s death. She was found in a hotel room surrounded by ink pots and needles. The news reporter shows a picture of Dee on the bed with a pink flamingo tattooed on her back. It seems Dee died due to an allergic reaction to the pink dye and confirmed her fears of getting her tattoos colored. Brett is clearly upset because the two had become quite close. Listening further to the report, Brett learns that a tall redhead matching Brett’s description was seen leaving the scene of the crime. The cops have labeled Brett as the prime suspect in Dee’s murder.
If that wasn’t enough, a blog has started showing up on the internet. The blog is showcasing Dee’s flamingo tattoo. Then pictures start showing up of Brett on the blog. It seems she is being followed all over town and comments "from her" also start showing up. Brett’s not just being followed, she’s being impersonated by someone that either looks just like her or is trying very hard. Brett is racing the clock to find Dee’s killer before the dye is cast on her.
Ms. Olson is back again with an exciting new tale in the Tattoo Shop Mystery series. Brett is back in the thick of things and now the mystery is even more personal. Now Brett is wanted for a murder that she couldn’t possibly have committed. Even though she has promised not to play investigator, she just can’t seem to help herself. Dee’s killer always seems to be one step ahead of Brett and the police and makes for a great thrill ride to the very end. I think readers will be surprised at the end by who killed Dee and why. I always find that the great mysteries are the ones that keep you guessing until the very end and then throw a twist that you never see coming. Kudos to Ms. Olson for another great entry into this series.
