After a shipwreck that kills her mother and her mother's lover, Katerina Bruni, daughter of an infamous Italian courtesan, seizes her chance to escape the life of a courtesan. Katerina takes on the identity of the Italian widow of an English soldier and seeks employment as a governess. As Mrs. Catherine Brown, she obtains the position of governess to the sister and daughter of Michael Lindley, the younger brother of an earl.

Since the death of his wife, Michael has tried to live an exemplary life. Once a rake, Michael now lives a peaceful life in the country. Michael's peaceful life is shattered, when the beautiful governess arrives. Michael and Katerina are drawn to each other, but secrets have a way of coming out.

Lady Midnight is an enjoyable historical romance with complex characters and a true regency feel. Katerina is torn between her love for Michael and her fear that her past will hurt Michael and his family. Michael blames himself for his wife's death and fights his growing feelings for Katerina. Michael is a wonderful hero--a dependable, stand-up man, a wonderful father, but with a checkered past. The secondary characters are equally as complex and intriguing, especially Michael's sister. I even found myself feeling sympathy for the villain. Ms. McCabe has a true grasp of regency society and mores; I highly recommend Lady Midnight.
