This is a debut novel. I love debut novels. This is a dramatic and complicated novel that will please fans of both European crime fiction and religious thrillers. If you liked The DaVinci Code, you will also like this.
A classics scholar turned lawyer, Jonathan Marcus, is called back to his former love, archeology after becoming involved in an antiquities theft case that his law firm is handling. He is called to Rome by his firm to examine a fragment of an ancient stone map belonging to a client. During the examination he finds a hidden message carved inside the stone. This discovery pushes him on a journey from the passages under the Coliseum to the Biblical tunnels of Jerusalem in search of a hidden 2000-year old artifact sought by empires throughout the ages. As Jonathan and a UN preservationist, Dr. Emili Travia, look more deeply into the past, they discover an ancient intelligence operation that was put in place to protect the artifact. Also, a ruthless modern plot to destroy all trace of it and erase every remnant of Jewish and Christian presence from the Temple Mount. This is a gripping thriller spanning the worlds of archaeology, politics and terrorism in a plot to define or redefine history. Even readers who are not familiar with Roman and Judaic history or archaeology will be able to follow along with this plot.
This book is a veritable feast of everything I love: History, conspiracy, secrets and adventure. A smart and sophisticated thriller that is a definite prize that captivated me until the last page. So, fasten your seat belts and enjoy the ride.
