Nika has been living in fear for years ever since her family was attacked and her sister Tori was taken by the Synestryn. The Synestryn are evil monsters bent on taking over the world and unlocking the doorway to the next. In the attack Nikaís mother was killed, her sister Tori was taken, and she herself was poisoned to the point of death. With the help of a stranger Nika was able to recover physically. Her mind, on the other hand, is still fractured. With every drop of blood that was taken from Nika during the attack, a little piece of her mind was forged with the monster that took it. Nika is able to have a psychic link with every monster that has her blood. There is only one way for her to recover completely. All the monsters that have her blood must be killed. Nika also has a psychic link with Tori and must convince everyone that she is still alive before it is too late.
Madoc is one of the Sentinels. The Sentinels are one of three races descended from ancient guardians of mankind. Their job is to protect humankind from the Synestryn. Each Sentinel bears a lifemark, a tree with many leaves, on his chest. As each leaf falls, the Sentinel gets closer to the end of his life. The only way to ensure this does not happen is to find a mate and forge a bond with them to regenerate the leaves. Madoc has no more leaves on his lifemark and his soul is dying. He fears what he may do to those he is sworn to protect, especially Nika. Nevertheless, he is drawn to Nika as she seems to be the only one to calm the beast he hides. Will she be able to save him before itís too late?
Ms. Butcherís Sentinel War series is a wonderful addition to the paranormal realm. Itís exciting, fast-paced and certainly takes the reader on a thrill ride. Nika and Madocís story is well written. Madoc seems to be the only one who believes Nika when she insists that her sister Tori is still alive. Nika is also not afraid of the tough exterior that Madoc shows the rest of the world. She knows how to tame the beast inside and they end up making a wonderful team against the enemy. Nika gives him the hope to believe there is still goodness within his soul and that the world is not so bleak. This book is such a phenomenal read and I think readers will have a hard time putting it down.
