Charli Friedmont is in terrible trouble. She’s accused of a crime that she didn’t commit. When the sheriff shows up to arrest her, she thinks it’s part of a revenge plot on his behalf. Charli used to be hot and heavy with the now Sheriff Jack Mansfield. But she dumped him for a loser and married the loser. Jack hasn’t ever seemed to recover from her betrayal. So how else can she take it when he shows up to arrest her—in front of her young daughter?
Jack has forgiven Charli—but he’s never forgotten her. He’s slowly but surely been trying to work his way back into her life. All that hard work was finally paying off and he was even starting to see Charli socially, and then he has to put it all on the line and arrest her. He tries to give her as much dignity as possible in the arrest, but she doesn’t see it that way.
Jack bullies his younger brother Sonny, a private investigator, into taking Charli’s case. Sonny starts to see that a very elaborate scheme was set up to frame Charli. Now to find out who really committed the crime.
Does Charli have enough time to discover the real thief? She doesn’t realize it, but the thief has decided she needs to be eliminated. He wants to make it look like she ran away to avoid being punished. Things start to happen that are really scary. She wants to turn to Jack for protection, but can she ever trust Jack again?
A suspenseful story from beginning to end. I wasn’t sure if Charli would ever allow enough of her emotional guard down to restart something with Jack. Jack is quite a guy. He is willing to drop everything to help Charli out. He still loves her, but is trying to give her distance and space to make up her mind. Will she ever make a decision? And can he live with what she decides?
Sonny Mansfield takes a job to find an estranged wife and son. He knows it is easy money and allows the husband’s story to mix with his own jaded past and decides to take the job. When he finds the woman, he quickly turns over the information—and then begins to suspect he had been taken as an easy mark. He decides to do a little sleuthing on his own and try to find out if Tanya O’Brien is really a hardhearted wife or a woman who needs his protection.
Sonny manages to rent out the room over Tanya’s garage and uses the vantage point to keep an eye on her. The more he learns about her, the more he likes her and realizes that he may have led a ruthless stalker straight to her sanctuary. Can he keep her safe from this man? Will Tanya be kidnapped or killed?
Another spellbinding story that keeps you reading well into the night. Tanya is a smart and spunky gal who has been worn down to the breaking point from the stalker. She is a loving single mom and will do whatever it takes to keep them safe. She and Sonny hit it off, but she knows nothing could ever develop between them because he doesn’t fit any of the criteria she has set for a potential husband. Since she knows he will never do, why does she keep thinking of Sonny?
I loved this story, too and can’t wait to see how everything turns out for the third Mansfield brother. We were given a few hints throughout these two stories, but it will be exciting to read that whole story from start to finish.
Beyond the two stories in this book, there are discussion questions and a preview of the final book in the Mansfield brothers’ trilogy. It looks like it will be another must read.
