Kristi heads to All Saints College where strange things have been happening. Co-eds have been disappearing – four to date. The police have written it off to the fact that these girls were pretty much loners anyway and since their families didn’t disagree, the disappearances were written off to the young women taking on too much and running off. Kristi isn’t too sure.
In fact, Kristi is thinking something much more sinister is happening at this college. Given that she has a dream of writing a true crime novel this could be the perfect starting place for her. She begins her own investigation into what happened to these "lost souls" and is further pushed by the coincidence of her moving into one of those girls old apartments.
As she is attending classes, one of her professors is Jay McKnight. It turns out that he is the man she once cared for deeply and gave her virginity too. Emotions are still running high and the fact he is involved with law enforcement doesn’t hurt either. She takes him into her confidence with the investigation. Needless to say, they do more than just investigate.
Things really start to heat up through when Kristi stumbles down the wrong path and ends up in a position she never anticipated.
Lisa Jackson is a very clever writer but unfortunately, this isn’t one of her best pieces of work. Don’t get me wrong, the first chapter (the prologue actually) started out with a bang and the reader thinks they are hooked. The downside is that things stalled for a bit after that. I found myself going from parts that could have been cut to parts that I absolutely couldn’t stop reading.
The up and down of my emotions was really hard for me to keep up with. I struggled in the beginning too because of the number of characters involved in this one. I can’t say that any of them shouldn’t have been there but I had to work to keep them all straight. I also never quite understood Kristi’s background. On the good side, though, Lisa is a very descriptive writer and the reader could really grab onto that to set the scene.
I think her plotline was okay in the end but the book itself could have been shortened and by doing so would have had greater intensity. I certainly wouldn’t say this isn’t an enjoyable read just be prepared to work at it a bit.
