When Lara's cell phone rang in the middle of the night she noticed the number was her own land line. Then she heard the compelling voice through the receiver, only it seemed that it was not only coming from the phone but from everywhere and it was telling her to come downstairs. As much as Lara fought the urge she couldn't completely stop herself from going to see who was in her house asking for help. In one of her chairs Lara found Robert with a gunshot wound to his shoulder and in the shadows Robert's protector Tony. If only Lara could have gotten away or fought the urge to help Robert she would have because after she was done saving Robert's life her life was going to change.

Lara is a surgeon and a very good one; that is why Robert sought her out to help him.  All of a sudden Lara is put into the custody of the WPAVU, or Witness Protective Agency Vampire Unit though she does not believe anything she is being told nor does she want to give up her life. Here is where Lara becomes Meridian Jones, a night shift nurse at St. Mary's Medical Center. Lara had to become Meridian and change her image because the WPAVU knew that Robert would be looking for her and this was the only way to keep her safe, or so they thought.  Lara or now Meridian is put here in search of a vampire or vampires that are taking blood out of the blood bank in the hospital.

With Lara/Meridian's investigating she meets Bobby Eyre, another night nurse. While putting some things together in her investigation, Meridian needs to find out if Bobby is actually the same person as Robert or if he's something or someone else all together. Meridian has to do all of this while falling in love with Bobby and trying to keep herself safe.

This book is a little confusing at first, but it really comes together. In my opinion Raz Steel does a very great job in keeping things from you until they are needed to be told and that in itself keeps you reading to either find out if you guessed right or to see what happens next. I couldn't put the book down in wondering what would happen next and wanting to know if I was right in what I guessed would happen next. I love books that keep you going even if it is the wee hours of the morning and you know you need to sleep but just can't tear yourself away.

In the Lara/Meridian and Bobby relationship the tug and pull between them is greatly written. Both feel something toward one another but really neither wants to act on it. Not until it becomes apparent they need one another in what they both are searching for.

I highly recommend this book. It's a great combination of romance, mystery and paranormal all rolled into one!
