Mackenzie’s Legacy by Linda Howard is book which contains two stories related to the Mackenzie family; Mackenzie’s Mountain and Mackenzie’s Mission.
Mackenzie’s Mountain is the story of a school teacher named Mary Potter, a self proclaimed spinster who is working hard to stop a bright talented boy named Joe Mackenzie from dropping out of school. When Mary goes to speak with Joe’s father about the boys promise, and tries to convince both Joe and his father Wolf that Joe should let her tutor him, Mary finds herself falling in love with the Native American man and his son who are ostracized by a prejudiced town.
In Mackenzie’s Mission, Joe Mackenzie, now thirty-two years old and an Air Force pilot finds himself attracted to Caroline, a weapons expert. Determined to keep other men he works with from harassing Caroline, Joe and Caroline pretend to be dating. Ultimately though, their dates and feelings become real. As problems arise due to sabotage that could only be due to an inside job, Joe begins to worry that Caroline may be responsible.
I really enjoyed these two stories. They were the first ones by Linda Howard that I have read. In both these stories, the main female characters were shown as strong, self-sufficient women who were also shy and very inexperienced. Ms. Howard did a good job showing how the two men who came to love them were able to break through the protective exterior that both women placed around themselves.
Both Wolf and Joe Mackenzie were strong, caring men who cared a great deal for the women they loved. Both the men and women in the novel and the way they related to each other kept the stories interesting and the pace quick. This book is a definite must read.
