All she wanted was a family of her own to love and who would love her in return so Caroline Bradley accepted a position as governess to Major Smith’s children. If she couldn’t have her own children then she would "borrow" someone else’s.

Major Tristan Willoughby-Smith a retired British army officer and 3rd son of a duke needed someone to care for his children in more ways than just the obvious. Yes, he was widowed but he also had malaria. The disabling and often fatal disease had him scared. He had to protect his children at all costs, especially from his manipulating father.

Within hours of Caroline’s arrival, Tristan gets word that his brothers are both dead and he’s to return to England at once. Not to be bullied, Tristan has no intention of returning so soon, if word got out that he had malaria, his son would be lost to him by the duke. The only logical solution is for Tristan and Caroline to marry. If it came to it, Caroline could runaway with the children with all legal rights.

Caroline’s heart’s desire was coming true but not in the way she had hoped. Was there anything wrong with wanting love? She didn’t think so but apparently God had other plans for her. Because Tristan didn’t jump when his father said to jump, the duke is on his way to bring Tristan "home". How will Caroline manage with the duke?

As sometimes happens when coping with dire circumstances, Tristan and Caroline fall in love. But is their love enough to cope with the duty Tristan has as well as Caroline’s feelings of inadequacy? God has plans for the couple though circumstances get twisted and manipulated and misunderstandings abound, love and happiness just may work out for them all.

Marrying the Major is the "last chapter" in the Women of Swan’s Nest series. As historical westerns go Caroline and Tristan’s tale is a nice surprise giving the reader a taste of regency with a western flavor. Victoria Bylin’s imagination and creativity flourish in this story not only with the story itself but with loving characters and not-so-loving characters as well as a visit from the previous heroines in the series.

I would have loved an epilogue with a peak at how life has and is treating Tristan and Caroline. Even at that this gives the reader the ability to run wild with your imagination.

Taking the time to get to know Tristan and Caroline is definitely time well spent.
