Faith Weston is a K-9 handler for the police department and in need of a dog. Little did she know just what she was getting into. There seems to be increasing crime in the town of Clarkston which the Chief of Police is claiming is due to drugs. He and the officers are working hard to crack down on drug usage and traffickers but murder also seems to be on the rise. Faith is also starting to be watchful of a number of circumstances in her life.
Jim London is a man beyond normal men. Jim is a Dire Wolf and belongs to a clan of such beings. The myths of werewolves couldn’t be further from the truth and they want to live as normal as possible – just as you and I. Jim, however, is now a man with a mission as his best friend and partner, Tony Shay, has been brutally murdered. When Jim escorts Tony’s mother to view and identify the body, Jim gets some pretty big clues this was no ordinary murder. There is a scent to the body as well as a number of the police officers and Tony’s heart has been cut out.
The only way Jim can see that he can find out more is to become a member of the police department. The police officers would recognize him as a human but as a dog…well that might just be the ticket.
Faith is thoroughly intrigued and delighted by the new dog donated for her use. He seems to be truly able to understand her and they work together in every way. She finds herself confiding things to her dog she would say to no other human – in part because she has cut off most close relationships in her life. Jim is finding that falling in love with a human is much harder than he anticipated. All comes to a head the day Faith finds herself in a situation she never bargained for and wished with all her heart was a dream. No such luck – it is the beginning to a whole new chapter of her life.
Angela Knight writes with tremendous power and strength. I find she develops great depth to her characters and the plots she creates. So you may be wondering why I rated Master of Wolves as a 3.8. This was a hard book for me to rate. It wasn’t really the subject matter although it isn’t something I would normally pick up and read for myself. I found I actually began to view the subject matter of the werewolves and vampires as much a part of the story as the red color of Faith’s hair. What I struggled with is the first part of the book was very hard to follow.
If you have the same understanding of werewolves and the world they come from as Angela does this shouldn’t pose a problem for you and you will find yourself hooked from the prologue. For me, however, it was very difficult. The culture Jim springs from is alluded to many times along with how they fit in today’s world, consequences, perks and all. It wasn’t until about half way through that the writer actually sets the entire past for you. I won’t share what causes these illustrations but I will say at that point many things finally clicked into place and I could concentrate on just the events unfolding. I will say though that Faith’s quick acceptance to what was happening around her was certainly something I couldn’t have done personally but then again she had Jim to help her walk through it. After that point the book soared to a five on my scale. There was romance, passion, intrigue, action, plots, sadness, joy and so much more.
I would still recommend this book for reading because it finishes quite well.
