Maya Valentine is spending the summer break at her recently deceased father’s home in Oregon. She needs time to grieve and recharge before she heads back to the city and her teaching job.
Well known author Stanton Black is in Oregon doing research on a book. When he comes across Maya skinny dipping in the lake he is not pleased. He isn’t interested in gold digging women after him for his fame.
Maya isn’t about to get all upset over one man’s misconceived opinion of her. She has other things on her mind. Does she give into the pressure of a pushy real estate agent and sell her father’s home? And what of her neighbour Alice? How can she help the sick woman out? The answer? Playing tour guide to the famous author. Neither Maya nor Stanton is impressed with this idea. However she does it to help out Alice. He does as he has no other option. Or do they?
Maya’s Gold has all the elements of a great romance. It’s slow building with both characters sparking off each other. I like the fact that their total disinterest and suspicion slowly grows to recognition of real and lasting love. In an age where the characters fall into bed after they meet, this book is a nice contrast. Maya is smart and capable as is Stanton. You want to see them get together and I like that they take their time as the story unfolds around their romance.
I also enjoyed the mystery in the book. I kept wondering what’s the story with Alice, why everyone wants Maya’s property and what was the real story behind the reclusive Stanton. No, I won’t spoil it but suffice to say if a book can keep you guessing to the end, as this one did, then I consider it a keeper.
Maya’s Gold is all about slow, burning passion and what’s going on mystery. If you want a book with real characters, love and suspense then you will enjoy this book.
