Connor McFarlane might be a big hotshot hotel magnate, but when he first meets Tori Jones, she only has one word to summarize Connor. That word would be rude! Tori is a schoolteacher in Thunder Canyon and had just met CJ, Connor’s son when Connor came barging in to remove CJ from his new friend Jerilyn and Tori. Rumor is that Connor is in town to try to mend fences with CJ over the summer while also trying to buy out the local resort. Townsfolk are a little nervous about losing their jobs.
Tori’s path keeps crossing with Connor’s and she starts to see beyond the arrogant exterior her wears. She starts to think he might be ok when he asks her a huge favor. His ex-wife is trying to take CJ away for the rest of the summer and he lies and tells his ex that he’s engaged to Tori. When he asks her to pose as his fiancée for the summer, she’s not sure what to do. Will she say I do for now? And can her heart handle it when summer is over and Connor is gone?
I know this is part of a series, but it felt so natural standing alone that new readers won’t be lost. I caught pieces of back-story that would catch a returning reader up with all the happenings in Thunder Canyon. The back-story was worked into the storyline in a seamless fashion. Tori is quite a character. She’s clever and smart and her penchant for all things organic gave me a few chuckles along the way. Connor seems to be her match. He comes across as arrogant, cold, calculating and uncaring, but as she peels away the layers of his armor, Tori finds a lonely man who needs to be loved.
I was cheering Tori and Connor on throughout the book. Tori has so much love to give and I was afraid her heart would be shattered by their arrangement. I had to hold back a little anger towards Connor when he couldn’t figure out what he really needed to do. But, in the end, his actions gave him redemption in my eyes.
This story went by so fast I couldn’t believe it was over. I was enchanted by the story and couldn’t put the book down.
