There’s been loss in Marina Lucchesi’s life. She lost her father in an accident and was seriously injured herself. Now the family company has been taken away from her and her brother, Sebastian. Though she wants the company back, it looks as if she’s powerless to retain ownership on her own.
Marina instantly intrigues Ronan Carlisle as she confronts Wakefield about his underhanded business ethics and company stealing at a public function. He wants her. And he has something she wants, too. A way to get her company back.
But is pretending to be Ronan’s mistress the only way? It’s certainly not something Marina feels comfortable with. Especially given her feelings for Ronan. Feelings she’s sure aren’t reciprocated, as he only feels sorry for her. Yet, when Seb(astian) shares the news of his wife’s pregnancy, Marina knows she has to do whatever she can to get the company back.
Ms. West has a great sense of description of the physical, of the things that can be touched. I had no trouble picturing the settings or Marina herself. In fact I saw Marina as a young Hollywood Jane Russell. But I hit a snag with some word usage, descriptions of remembered kisses, thoughts of wanting the other, etc. At times I felt they were a bit flowery.
With the internal conflicts and complexes Marina has, Ms. West has created a heroine many readers will relate to. We’re given a "real" heroine who is unsure of herself and not with stunning looks or a model’s body. It was a pleasure to watch Marina become more self-assured and change from the proverbial ugly duckling to graceful swan.
Ms. West has created a sizzling debut, full of the passion Harlequin Presents is known for. Becoming a favorite with the Presents readers is inevitable.
