Parenting is a tough issue all the way around. There are many events which happen during the course of parenting that we, as parents, never anticipated. This can be complicated by events which shaped our lives as children – whether that be through parental divorce, outside influences, etc. One of the keys issues for any parent is having a past role model which is typically our own parents. In the event, you lost your parent during childhood, where does that leave you when you become a parent?

Hope Edelman published Motherless Daughters in 1994 and has now followed this up with Motherless Mothers in 2006. Hope writes in a fashion which is laid out very cleanly and in many ways very simply; although her topics are anything but. She covers the issues which start with the very pregnancy itself and follows it through the entire timeline of the child’s life through the teenage years.

I have to admit I had some preconceived notions where this book was involved. Yes, my family had issues when I was growing up and many which I have had to deal with in adulthood and especially in my parenting methods. When I first glanced through Motherless Mothers, I thought yep, parenting without having a mother growing up would be tough and this seems pretty obvious. The book itself though opened my eyes to many new issues. Don’t get me wrong, Hope lays out some pretty common sense stuff as well as some eye openers. They work together to get the entire picture. For many of us dealing with an issue, the most common sense thing is the hardest one for us to see.

Well done Hope and thank you for touching on an intriguing subject.
