Dani loves her job as secretary at Beckman & Sons. She does paperwork, filing and office work without having to answer phones or deal with people. She’s just not good with people. She stammers and can’t think straight and becomes a nervous wreck when in social situations. When the receptionist is ill, Dani has to take her place as the recorder for an important board meeting. She does such a terrific job that Harrison Beckman (Mr. Beckman’s son) puts her onto a special project and eventually uses her as his personal secretary.
She might have fallen for Harrison if the marvelous Maxwell hadn’t swept her off her feet. She’s getting cozy with him and helping both Maxwell and Harrison as they work to merge their two companies together. Everybody she knows seems against her and Maxwell as a couple. Can she overcome their objections to make a long distance relationship work?
This short story is a light, fast read. Dani is struggling under tremendous self-pressure. She has such a low self-esteem that it seems she will never be able to overcome it. Through a series of events, her personal beliefs are challenged and she finds that being a ‘good person’ might not be enough. As she struggles with her faith and her relationships, we get to see her turning over a new leaf.
Harrison was losing his heart to Dani when she starts dating Maxwell. He knows he must bide his time, but waiting isn’t his strong suit. He’s convinced they should be together and he doesn’t trust Maxwell at all, but what’s a boss to do? Harrison keeps such a strong presence throughout the story and I found myself rooting for him to win Dani’s heart.
Some surprising things happen that might jeopardize Dani’s career and life as she knows it. It was interesting to watch her grow and work through these issues. I enjoyed the story, but wished for a longer read to get a little more involved with each character. I found it to be an easy and enjoyable read.
