Lee Patros is a man of wealth and influence. Living in France incognito as a wealthy wine grower and landowner from Greece, he is really Prince Lysandros of Patrai. Exiled to France during the civil war in Greece, he is incognito to protect his life. The opposing faction wants to assassinate him which would further their own cause. When he on holiday in Nice, he attends a lecture about recent archaeological discoveries on Crete. He wants to assuage his homesickness by hearing about his beloved Greece. When he sees the speaker, Genevieve de Villiers, she enthralls him. He is used to every woman chasing after him and meeting Genevieve, he discovers she is articulate, serious about her profession, and not interested in him. Too bad, as he would welcome her interest in him.
Genevieve has the opportunity to dine with Lee and finds an easy camaraderie between them. Since they both speak fluent Greek, they can converse about the country they both love. When Lee discovers she will be traveling back to Paris on the same train as him, he invites her to share his salon. This begins a friendship that Lee hopes might blossom into more. He keeps his true identity a secret, hoping Genevieve will fall in love with "Lee" instead of "His Royal Highness". However, when she learns his secret, can she forgive his lies?
A sweet story that exposes some of the little insecurities we all have about ourselves. I enjoyed watching the characters grow emotionally as they learned that some of their self-beliefs might not be totally accurate. To watch the innocence of friendship blossom into love and passion is very moving. I laughed and cried with them as they struggled to find out who they truly were as individuals and as a couple. The sub-theme of trust after telling half-truths and how to overcome lies made for interesting reading.
