Lady Deidre has escaped from her cousin on a quest to find the Philosopher’s Stone, stolen when her mother was the high priestess and sworn to protect it. After the stone had gone missing, Dee’s mother had killed herself. Dee was sent to be trained as a "true lady" at court with her cousin and his mother. When her cousin King Childebert begins to seek the stone, she sneaks away from court to retrieve the stone first. When her guard is captured, she narrowly escapes. Then she’s almost raped by being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Luckily for her, Gilead saves her from the brutish man and helps her out by making her a ladies maid to his mother. Dee’s head is filled with all kinds of romantic notions since she’s been reading about King Arthur since she was small. She hopes that Gilead will be her prince and champion.

Gilead has feelings for Dee, but thinks she could be a spy. After he discovers who she really is and what her quest is, he begins to help her. As he finds himself enamored by her, he is duped into a betrothal that would gain lands for his family. He father won’t consider backing off the engagement—and he thinks he might love Dee.

When he tries to get Dee to admit her feelings, she lies to protect him. However, fate has other things in store. Will Dee and Gilead both be forced into loveless matches or can they find a way to be with their true loves?

This book is a wonderful read, especially since I love castles and keeps. The love scenes are smoking hot so keep a cool glass of lemonade nearby! I love the way Ms. Breeding uses the slang from that era and keeps the brogue in the writing without making the reader confused. I found myself wanting to tell my family, "Dinna fash (don’t worry)" when things went wrong. It was a very easy read with a plotline that was easy to understand. While there were some surprises in store for the reader, it wouldn’t cause confusion to the reader. A well-written book sprinkled with a fanciful dash of desire to see Camelot become real, complete with a knight in shining armor.
