Maggy Hoot is a wisecracking, funny, sarcastic, energetic, popular, woman…so okay, she is actually an animated owl in Arborville but she is something to see and hear. Lindy Edwards is the real life woman behind the cartoon who makes up the voice of Maggy. This celebrity status tends to create some issues for her in her personal life - - mainly her love life. It seems that the minute she tells men what she does for a living they start asking her to do the voice and become fixated on the "job" she does instead of on her. So, she usually hedges about what she does for awhile before telling them and then judging how they react. This latest one is no different unfortunately in spite of her holding out high hopes.
At this same time, Lindy is dealing with another failed romance, she finds out that their network is sending a "suit" to review their show and take a look at the feasibility of their continued existence. Well, now doesn’t that just fit the bill? Nigel (the creator) is a nervous wreck as well as some of the other members of the show (voices and writers). Lindy is trying desperately to keep her head (along with theirs) calm. Then enter Leo. Now Leo doesn’t look like the typical suit but suit from the Evil Empire he is so Lindy must keep her distance.
That becomes more difficult to do as she finds herself liking him in spite of the background he hails from. Her life has become so focused on her job and her job has become her that losing that job, which life, just seems to be more than her mind can take it.
Allie really showed us all a little something with this simple love story. Okay, it isn’t so simple when someone you have sworn to not get involved with becomes the person you can’t stay away from. However, we are all struggling with something. Lindy complained about no man seeing beyond Maggy to get to Lindy but I have to wonder if Lindy was complaining because she was doing the same thing. Somewhere along the line the boundaries between Lindy and Maggy became very blurred because, in large part, Lindy loved being Maggy. Not too many of us can say that we truly love the job we do and look forward to going to work. Lindy was one of the lucky few who could voice those words.
That made things even more difficult when the possibility of losing something you loved so dearly became a possibility. Allie didn’t let that destroy Lindy, however, and showed the reader that faith can turn "My So-Called Love Life" into something much more.
