Dawn Madison's mother was a very famous actress, who died very young, and Dawn was raised by her father, who never quite came to terms with her mother's death. Now, Dawn, who has been working as a stunt person, is summoned to L.A. because her father has disappeared. Once in L.A., Dawn becomes involved with the P.I. firm for which her father had been working. This firm's owner is a mysterious person, who never lets himself be seen and has great mind control powers. Dawn and the other investigators are not only trying to find her father, but discover what is behind the reappearance on film of a supposedly dead child star. Dawn finds herself very confused, when another P.I., Matthew Lonigan, insinuates that the owner of her P.I. firm can not be trusted. In addition to all this, vampires of every variety seem to be coming out of the woodwork.

Ms. Green creates a complex, intriguing world in her new urban fantasy series. The vampires are varied in their strengths and weaknesses, and while the vampires are creepy, I still haven't decided whether they are actually evil. The heroine, Dawn, has several psychological issues to overcome and struggles greatly with them. While Night Rising starts off with a bang, several times later in the book the action in the plot seems to get bogged down by Dawn's issues. There is only a hint of romance in Night Rising and a cliffhanger ending. Hopefully, many questions will be answered in the next installment. Night Rising would make a good read for the reader of dark, urban fantasy.
