Noelle Blanche is a petite, cute red head but it isn’t her outwardly appearance that gets her noticed. Noelle is a brilliant scientist who can do mathematical equations for fun and cryptology comes easy. However, she and her sister were also raised by parent scientists who taught them to be very careful where they used their gift so it was never turned into a weapon of violence. So, when Noelle is approached with a grant from the U.S. Government to work on some new algorithms, she quickly says no – even when it means losing her job.
What she isn’t prepared for is that there are other factions out there who also want her gift. They show up uninvited, dressed in black and bearing tranquilizer darts one evening. Noelle doesn’t quite know what to think when one of these men dressed in black whispers in her ear to be quiet and he will get her out of alive. The violence Noelle had hoped to avoid has now visited her home in a big way and her mystery man has stolen her away. While she feels a lot of fear that night, her hero makes her feel protected and safe.
David takes her to a safe house for the government where she is given the choice – help us or … I will let you fill in the blank. Noelle quickly discovers they aren’t kidding but still will not agree to help. David then lays down his reason for being a part of this mission. He had left the force two years prior because his wife had been kidnapped by ‘The Swarm’ (the group that now wants Noelle). What he lays down are the pictures of how his wife was found when they were done with her. When Noelle realizes that she could actually be saving lives, she finally agrees to get involved.
The safe house is attacked and David realizes that they are no longer safe with the government. They go on the run with David watching her back (and so much) while she works on the project.
Shannon K. Butcher has hit this one out of the park. The suspense will keep you on the edge of your seat as you travel the clandestine path with David and Noelle. The tension is so thick you will jump with the creaks in your own house. And, not only is the suspense tension readily apparent so is the sexual tension.
For the first time in two years, David is reawakening to the real world. Plus Noelle has been sheltered in the life of academe and approaches everything from a rational, intellectual way. This is the first time her feelings are truly being awakened and are getting actively involved. The sparks between the two of them lift right off of the page.
No Regrets is truly one of those books you will have no regret about staying up late into the night reading. I certainly didn’t!
