The world of ballroom dancing comes alive through the turbulent partnership of Nicole Dubois and Breck Noon. We’re taken on the journey, rocky as it is, from the moment Nicole and Breck are paired up in high school, through the passage of several years, until the horrid chapter in Breck’s life is finally at an end.
Mrs. Dubois, who has a heart of gold, is involved in all aspects of Nicole’s dancing, including finding her daughter a new dance partner. It takes some time, but she does, in what some would think an unlikely place. The skate park.
Nicole is a spoiled, selfish rich girl whose only dream is to be the best and continually place first in ballroom dance competitions. And a grubby skater from across the tracks isn’t going to get her there. But she’s given no choice. Jealous of her mother’s interest in Breck, Nicole fights the pairing at every opportunity.
Breck feels Nicole’s animosity, yet he takes this opportunity as the lifeline he knows it is. He makes the most of the chances he’s been given until it all comes crashing down on him and obstacles block his way, their way. Again and again.
Each life is irrevocably changed from the moment Nicole and Breck become partners. Not only in the Dubois home, but in the Noon home as well. Changes that will bring them closer together and rip them apart.
This book, as titled, is Breck Noon’s story. He’s the one with the most to gain and lose. He’s the one you feel your heart going out to. He’s the one you feel for as he loses his heart to Nicole only to find himself removed unwillingly from her and her family’s lives.
Nicole on the other hand feels she’s entitled to everything and more. She’s not unlikable, however, it is a long time before she sees her attitude and behavior for what it was and makes some adjustments.
One downside...Even though my attention was thoroughly caught up in Breck and Nicole’s journey, I was often distracted with all the head hopping going on between the main and secondary characters.
On the flip side, my emotions were pulled in and tugged with Breck and his struggles and pain, his needs and desires, his sense of honor. I enjoyed being a part of his growth as well as Nicole’s. Being a part of their family.
Noon is a sweet yet emotional story of triumph over tragedy. A story I’m glad I had the opportunity to read.
