Lucas Grainger has seen too much death and destruction to women he loved to ever want to be involved with one again. He knows he will never marry and will never allow a woman to have any hold over him.
Rachel Davis would rather die then stay tortured and tormented by the Collins father and son who are holding her captive. They are determined to gain control of her extensive wealth by any means necessary. She will be their prisoner for as long as she lives—unless she can escape.
Lucas has kept up correspondence with the wife of his best friend for many years. Suddenly, he realizes the letters from Elias’ widow have stopped very abruptly. She also hasn’t returned any of his mail. Some discreet inquiries find that Elias Davis’ widow, Rachel, is staying with the Collins family. Smelling smoothing foul, Lucas goes after her to make sure all is well. It’s the least he can do to honor his friend’s memory.
When Rachel finally escapes into a blizzard in Omaha, she knows she will most likely freeze to death on the streets. Better to die frozen and free than tortured and held captive. Just as she plans to give up her life, she hears a voice that could only belong to one man---Lucas Grainger.
From there, Lucas and Rachel try to foil the evil plans of the Collins men. The only way to stop her immediate removal is for them to be married. While it goes against all he believes in, he offers to marry Rachel in order to save her. Since neither one of them can figure out a better solution, they arrange for a hasty marriage to keep her freedom. While running for their lives, they pick up the easy friendship that was gained over their years of correspondence. However, the marriage must be consummated and a child must be born to them to guarantee Rachel’s safety. Can they move their friendship to the marriage bed?
The romance spices up quickly and is passionate in its description. Lucas and Rachel have such a wonderful way of trying to best each other. It’s fun to watch the by-play between them. The suspense gains momentum as the list of people bought off by the Collins’ increases exponentially. By the time we reach the end of the story, the action, suspense and plot twists will keep you on the edge of your seat until you finish reading every last word. I just couldn’t put it down at the end. Amazing descriptions and fantastic surprises await you.
While this book wasn’t what I expected, I was wildly surprised by the well-written story that draws the reader in. It grabs your attention and holds it from the first page to the last.
