Lady Christabel, the Marchioness of Haversham, is desperate to
retrieve some letters stolen by her late husband and sold to repay his
gambling debts. The letters are being used to blackmail Prince George,
and Christabel's father is in danger of being charged with treason,
because he was given the duty of destroying the letters. The Prince
sends Christabel to meet Gavin Byrne and get his aid in retrieving the
letters. Gavin hates the Prince, because of the way he treated Gavin
and his mother. Gavin is the Prince's unrecognized illegitimate son and
Gavin plans to use the letters for his own revenge on the Prince. Gavin
convinces Christabel to pose as his mistress, so that she will receive
an invitation to a gambling party at the home of the blackmailer. Once
there, they plan to search for the letters.
One Night With A Prince is an entertaining historical romance with great characters and an interesting take on historical events. This is the last book in the series about the Prince's illegitimate sons, and I enjoyed it the most of the three books. Gavin is a tortured hero, who covers his emotions by pretending to be a scoundrel. Christabel is a spunky intelligent heroine, who can take care of herself. She slowly chips away at Gavin's facade, until he can no longer hide himself from her. Christabel is, also, ahead of her times in practicing self-defense moves. I loved the fact, that she could save herself. I greatly enjoyed One Night With A Prince and it spurred my interest in researching Prince George's relationship with Maria Fitzherbert. Great job Ms. Jeffries!
