Louisa North, illegitimate daughter of George IV, helps run a
charity organization, which seeks to aid women and children in prison.
Because Louisa seeks reform, she is looking at backing a candidate.
Unfortunately, some of the candidates, that she is contemplating, are
very radical. George IV offers Louisa's hand in marriage to Simon
Tremaine, the Duke of Foxmoor. In return for Simon controlling Louisa's
political tendencies, George IV will ensure that Simon is made prime
minister. Louisa has her own ideas and leads Simon on a merry chase.
At first, I had my doubts about Simon as a likeable hero-- he seemed a little too manipulative. However, when Simon's past was revealed, his motives and methods made more sense. Raised by a cold grandfather to believe himself unloveable and unable to love, Simon struggles with his feelings for Louisa. Louisa, equally, wants her own way but realizes that love and marriage require some compromise.
All in all, Only A Duke Will Do is a lovely historical romance with a great tortured hero. I highly recommend it.
