Jason Wilson is in many ways part of the walking wounded. He is an army ranger without an army. Due to too many interactions with loud sounds during covert operations, his hearing has been greatly diminished and the army can’t use him any longer. He also can’t go into a police department or other law enforcement with that hearing loss, so he is left at loose ends. (He even tried the wrestling venues.) After getting beaten up in the ring one too many times and not being able to "play" the game any longer, Jason finds himself without work and hitting the bottle. His army buddy Nolan Garrett had once offered him a job with E.D.E.N. Security run by himself and his siblings. Jason isn’t too sure Nolan will have him but he has run out of options.
Nolan knows a good thing when he sees it though and jumps on the chance to hire Jason "Plowboy" Wilson and trains him in the area of personal security. Jason’s first assignment is "Sweet Baby" Jane Perkins. Jane is a rock star who has carved out an interesting position in the field. People tend to discount her due to the tattoos and piercings – thereby creating the bad girl image. Underneath it all though, she becomes an average girl when she isn’t on the stage. That is an average girl who has someone after her.
She had once been attacked by a man who she testified against and he was sent to prison. He is now out and strange things have begun to happen which begs the question he is taking up where he left off. Jason isn’t completely convinced plus his training has been done so well, he knows he must cover all of the bases.
Cindy Gerard certainly keeps up the pace with Over the Line in her Bodyguards series. Each time I read one of her books I keep looking for the level to drop; however, it hasn’t happened yet. Over the Line is raw and yet poignant – rough and yet sweet – hard and yet soft. As the characters of Jane and Jason develop they become normal human beings. No, what they are facing isn’t exactly normal but the emotions and insecurities they each experience is normal. In spite of looking strong, almost overpowering, to the world, inside there are two people who have been hurt and are looking for comfort. While they are comforting though, there is just the right amount of sizzle and passion thrown in!
I enjoyed the strength which was developed with these characters and amplified by the secondary characters around them. The scenes set were quite realistic and fresh. I don’t know if these places all exist (I know some do) but I sure believed every word.
Well done, Cindy and I can’t wait for the next installment in The Bodyguards.
