For those of you who are new to the Parallel Series, you will have no trouble jumping in. This book is the second in the series, but reads like a stand alone book to a new reader. For those of you who are following the series, things are going to heat up. I want to applaud Ms. Knight up front for masterfully writing a second story that doesn’t bore a returning reader with the catch up information; yet, letting the story encompasses a new reader without making them feel left out or lost.
The books show how an alien race (the Refarians) are protecting earth from an evil alien race (the Antousians). The Antousians are out to destroy earth. The Refarians are attempting to activate the mitres, which is an ancient weapon hidden underground by Mirror Lake in Wyoming. This weapon can open portals in time and when activated, we see the parallel time streams running in parallel worlds.
In Parallel Heat, Thea and Marco are the key to keeping earth going. Since they are both empaths, they quickly understand the other timeline and realize how evil they were in that timeline. Thea and Marco are fighting their attraction for each other. Both are worried about the evil selves they have seen in the time streams. Can they overcome the fellings they have for each other and come together—or will they hae to love each other from afar?
Marco is a protector for the exiled Refarian King, Jared and his human wife, Queen Kelsey. Marco comes from a long line of royal protectors who are believed to have been annihilated by the Antousians. How he meets Jared the first time is worth the read. I still chuckle at the whole thing.
Thea is Jared’s cousin and was his intended. They were betrothed as children as the last possible attempt to save the royal line. Thea has some jealousy over the new queen and still has to remain a top military advisor for Jared. Kelsey works to befriend Thea with great Midwestern charm.
The story takes off right away and it a real page turner. I don’t want to give away the surprises in the book so I’ll just say that captures, bonding/mating and possible war added mystery and surprises to the story that I didn’t expect. The last chapters amazed me. The twists and turns keep coming until the last page. When I got to the final page, I wanted to cry---because I have to wait until April 2007 for the final book.
