Returning from her rumschpringe pregnant, Becky Troyer has lived with the shame and shunning from her Amish community. Becky’s guilt over shaming her family has sapped her spirit; her only joy is her daughter. Becky knows that she will become a spinster; no man will want her now.

Jacob Miller thought he was coming to Seymour from Pennsylvania because his cousin needed his help though it was a little early for the man swap that his home community and the community of Seymour had planned for the summer. Under this pretense Jacob’s Daed made these arrangements in hopes that Jacob will marry in Seymour. His Daed had nothing good to say about his Susie but Jacob loved her and planned to marry her, or so he thought. Until he met Becky.

There seemed to be a connection between Becky and Jacob from the start. But Becky knew that Jacob would never really want her when he knew the whole truth and besides he had a sweetheart back home. Jacob was becoming fascinated with Becky and the more he was around her the more fascinated he became. How can this be, he thought he loved Susie; but he’s never felt like this before.

Just when Becky and Jacob were on the verge of discovering if there might be more than friendship between them, complications arise and misunderstandings occur. Will Jacob shun Becky just as her Amish community has? How will Becky be able to get beyond her bad experiences and allow her love for Jacob to grow and allow Jacob to love her? Susie has a way of getting what she wants; will she pull them apart or help them discover the true path God has set for them?

Patchwork Dreams is a sweet story of love and forgiveness. Ms. Hilton not only shares her knowledge and research of the Amish lifestyle but also the inspirational message that God has a way of bringing all things together for good if we let Him. The characters are written with human-like qualities and emotions which pull at your heart.

Having read the second book in the Amish of Seymour County series (see A Harvest of Hearts review), I found that reading this first book helped set the stage for the series. If the Amish genre is one of your favorites, I highly recommend the Amish of Seymour County series.
