Kate Meadows is a successful San Francisco artist looking for a nice, solid, Christian man. Enter two handsome bachelors. The first: Michael Palmier. This super hunk is a famous makeup artist, specializing in turning ordinary women into alluring and beautiful creatures. He begins to flirt with Kate, rather than her physically perfect roommate, Maia. Although a nice enough man, Michael likes to pass along business cards every time he takes her out, "suggesting" beauty professionals and plastic surgeons who can help Kate become the true beauty that she was meant to be. The second suitor is Dr. Clive Anderson, who is much more interested in Kate’s work than her looks. This Brad-Pitt-’ish’ man, with the gorgeous eyes, makes poor Kate so nervous that she wants to hide away in her baggy t-shirts and paint-splattered relaxed-fit jeans, so he’ll take no notice of her presence.

But when Kate receives a makeover from Michael’s staff, and interested looks begin to come her way, she begins to wonder if contacts, dental work, and yoga might just be the right things to do in order to keep her life moving in a "happy" direction. But is she trying to please herself or the men she can’t figure out?

Woven throughout this humorous story are major points that readers – especially young women – should take to heart. Reminding me of Bridget Jones, I was troubled that this young, extremely creative woman was more interested in looking good than feeling good. Her fight to stay noticeable in a man’s eyes, mixed with her courage to please herself and God instead of others, offered a poignant view of a world that is literally teaching our young girls that what they look like on the outside is the only thing that matters.

Vanity certainly is a sin, and it’s enjoyable to watch Kate Meadows find a balance in her own life between sinner and savior. She offers valid ideas about change, being good to yourself, loving God, and holding out for that one soul who will always love you – Just As You Are.

Perfecting Kate is a great book that offers laughter, peace, fun and hope to any and all who make the wise choice to read it.
