Natalie Severin is a reporter for NONE, New Orleans News Eyes, and she’s seen some strange stories. However, when she sees local veterinarian, Ramses Montgomery, take down three attackers with lightning fast reflexes before healing a critically injured dog, she’s confused and aroused by his raw power. How can a man do such things? She knows there’s only one explanation for it—magic. After watching her deceased husband turn into a power crazed magic addict, she’s not interested in anything to do with magic. If only Ram could help her find her missing brother—who was also involved in magic.
Ram is a Mage who had been stripped of all power in a terrible spell. After being a shell of himself for years, his power is starting to return to full strength. But when Natalie touches him while he’s healing the dog, he has an immediate surge of power. He doesn’t know how, but somehow Natalie helps him and is connected to him, even though she refuses to acknowledge or have anything to do with magic.
Natalie and Ram decide to come to an uneasy truce and work together. It’s the only way to stop the animal smuggling ring they stumbled onto. And in a dangerous game of cat and mouse, they have to stop the smugglers before they become the hunted.
Natalie and Ram both come with a lot of baggage into a relationship. Both are very untrusting and wary of the other. It’s fun to watch them circle around like boxers in the ring. Yet, whenever one manages to connect with the other, sparks fly in all directions. While I enjoyed the romance playing out between Natalie and Ram, the mystery and suspense of the smuggling ring held my attention. Trying to figure out who is behind everything while staying one step ahead of this mastermind is an intense workout. I often sat biting my nails while we were hunting for clues, or being hunted by the smuggling ring. As we learn more, it appears that a rogue sorcerer is behind some of this plot and he may be out to kill Ram.
While Ram tries to protect Natalie, he also has to watch his back. Especially since Natalie’s brother just might be the one trying to kill them both.
A suspenseful look into the life of Mages and magic waits for you in Phoenix Unrisen.
