Brett Kavanaugh is a tattoo artist and owner of one of Las Vegas’s premier tattoo shops. A lot of the local drag queens get most of their ink done in her shop. In thanks for all the great work, Brett and company are invited to opening night at the Nylons and Tattoos show. The evening turns horribly wrong when one of the drag queens is hit in the chest with a wayward champagne cork. What seems like an innocent prank turns deadly when the dancer dies mysteriously soon after. Then another drag queen is found poisoned.
When one of Brett’s coworkers disappears and the local division of Homeland Security is out looking for her, Brett finds herself running all over Vegas trying to find answers to the mysterious deaths. All fingers seem to point to the person who shot the champagne cork in the club. The only defining thing about the person is a queen of hearts tattoo on the inside of the person’s arm.
I don’t usually go for the straight mystery books but I was pleasantly surprised by this book. It was a very easy read. It had all the right elements that a mystery should have. It has scandal, intrigue and an amateur sleuth piecing everything together and saving the day. I would liken Brett as a modern day Nancy Drew. She isn’t a trained sleuth but seems to find herself figuring out the mystery and tying up the loose ends with a pretty pink bow for the cops.
