Promise Me Tonight by Sara Lindsey is an entertaining historical novel about Isabella Weston and the love of her life James Sheffield. Izzy (as she is called) has loved James for as long as she can remember; ever since she was a child. James, a good friend of Izzy’s brother Henry has only seen Izzy as a sister, having been taken in by her family.
Having promised Izzy that he would return home for her coming out party, James is stunned to see what a beautiful woman Izzy has become. James soon learns that Izzy is in love with him and while he has strong feelings, he rebuffs her and runs away to join the service.
Promise Me Tonight is a highly entertaining novel which follows the romance between Izzy and James. It does a good job of exploring the ups and downs of their relationship as James comes to terms with his past, a past that may keep him from the woman he loves.
Ms. Lindsey does a good job of portraying the leads as well defined characters who are struggling with their feelings and with everything life throws in their way, on the road to happiness. The writing is crisp and the cast of supporting characters is also well defined making this romance an interesting and believable novel.
