Lizzie Nichols is in a great place. She has just graduated from college and has a great boyfriend who wants her to come and visit him while he is home for the summer. Now this is no ordinary place he wants her to come to but England. How exciting could that be? Lizzie decides to put everything on hold and spend her savings to go and spend the entire summer with Andrew in England.
Things very rapidly fall apart, however. She finds out at her graduation reception she didn’t really graduate and needs to complete a paper for her final step. Okay, that is no big deal as she can write the paper while in England. So, off she goes.
She arrives in England and doesn’t even recognize her boyfriend (nor he her). That was the first warning sign. Then she find out he is living with his parents (who happen to have a very full small house). There really isn’t anywhere for her to stay so Andrew’s mother rigs a loft bed out of MDF and cushion material for her - - over the washer and dryer!! Then she finds out Andrew is working A LOT of hours. (and more signs follow but I’ll let you discover them.)
After deciding the summer in England won’t work, Lizzie finds herself on her way to France. Her best friend, Shari, is spending the summer there with her boyfriend at a friend’s estate. Shari had invited her to join them so Lizzie is hoping it was a serious invitation. On the train ride, she meets another person who speaks English and finds herself downloading everything (and I do mean everything) to this stranger. Of course thinking she will never meet Luke again. Again I am going to leave you here to discover how this little adventure plays out.
I love Meg Cabot!! She has created a novel that quite frankly had me laughing out loud. I could just picture myself in some of these situations thinking "yep that could be me" or "that would be just my luck"! The scenes she creates are realistic and full and I particularly enjoyed the excerpts from Lizzie’s thesis which start each chapter --- very clever segue way.
The secondary characters are quite rich with their depth and very human. This story truly has just one main character, however, and that is Lizzie. Lizzie is unique, warm, humorous, spontaneous but yet sensual, compassionate, honorable and not to mention…well…the Queen of Babble!
