Returning to Tucker, Montana after her divorce and fast-paced life in Chicago was only meant to be a stop along the way for Maggie Harrison Sinclair. She was going to stay a while, relax, and regroup. Nothing permanent. That’s why she took a temporary job teaching English at the high school.
But she needs more, both personally and professionally, and she’s not sure she’ll find it in her hometown. Only to her surprise, there’s a battle to be won, which she’s very prepared to win. And the deciding vote between the new football field, scoreboard, and stands or new/revamped dramatic arts theater, is none other than school board member, Wayne Hammond.
Life has suddenly become more interesting, more challenging. Not only does Maggie have the opportunity to spark the student body and town’s interest in the arts, she has the opportunity to get reacquainted with Wayne. That doesn’t’ mean she’s going to stay, though. She plans on accepting a teaching position in San Francisco.
However, Maggie finds more than she bargained for. Wayne, while still handsome, quiet and shy, shows her there’s more to him than what she remembered. Something’s happening between them. Plus, teaching in her hometown and putting on a revue to stir interest in the arts has become more fulfilling than she imagined. But are these things enough to make Maggie stay?
Ms. McLaughlin has the ability to capture the foibles of human nature and transpose them into her characters lives and the story. There are more layers to them and the story than what it appears on the surface.
The internal struggles both main characters have are evident and may be recognized by some in their own lives, past and present. This makes the story more real and absorbing.
Simply put, I believe you’ll find The Rancher Needs a Wife to be a very enjoyable read. Look for more from this author as each book of hers gets better than the last.
