All Charlotte Ransome wants to do is get to Jamaica and marry to man she believes to be in love with. Now how she goes about getting to Jamaica though is one of the best stories I have yet to read in a historical romance setting.
Charlotte, all of 18, is not from a very rich family it being a navy family and all. But in society she could still land in a pretty good family if she plays her cards right. Her problem is she doesn't want to marry any of the men that fit into her social status. She thinks herself in love with Henry Winchester, a man that is below her status, not approved by her family and one who lives in Jamaica. Now all Charlotte has to do is figure out a way to get to Jamaica and marry Henry.
The plan Charlotte comes up with is brilliant though very, very dangerous. She decides to cut her hair and become a Midshipman, or Sailor on the ship Audacious. This is dangerous in so many ways but I will only tell you the two major ones.
Charlotte is not found out until she falls ill aboard her brother's ship. She comes down with yellow fever and the doctor agrees to keep her real identity secret so no one finds out aboard Audacious that there had been a woman among them. Her brother William does find out though and is surprisingly gentle on her.
While recovering from yellow fever, Charlotte realizes she has been fighting her feelings for some time and realizes she is in love with the man acting as Captain of the Audacious, Ned Cochrane. He used to be 1st Lieutenant to her brother William. Ned has had a crush on Charlotte for some time now and does know Charlotte's secret though he has told no one but William's wife. He struggles with whether to tell William or not but is afraid of what could happen if William were to get mad and drag her off of Audacious. Thank goodness though when all is found out William is level headed and thinks of a way to keep everything under wrap.
This is such a well-written and good book to read that I can't give away everything. I really want you to read it and find out what happens. I for one love historical books where the girl does not go by the code of the century. She goes off does what she wishes, gets what she wants and doesn't really care what others think of her, but on the other hand does worry about the reputation of her family. Charlotte is a perfect example of one such girl. She actually makes me wish I could have lived back in her time and had her as a friend.
