Glory St. Clair is a centuries-old vampire living in Austin, TX. She owns a vintage clothing store and caters to not only the humans of Austin, but to the creatures that come out at night. Glory also seems to have attracted an abundance of men interested in her, extra pounds and all. Just when Glory thinks her life with long-time boyfriend Jeremy Blade is on the right track, Lucifer himself takes an interest in her and offers her a devilish deal.
Lucifer sends to of his top demons to Glory and asks for a deal. They want her to procure souls for them to take back to Hell. In exchange for this, they are willing to give Glory her most desired wish. All she has to do is sign her soul over to them and they’ll grant whatever she wants. Glory is sorely tempted but is not willing to give up her soul for it. The demons, of course, have some tricks up their sleeves and give Glory an incentive. They decide to give to her what all vampires wish they could have back….her reflection. Glory hasn’t been able to look upon her face in centuries and is amazed that her boyfriend has stayed with her all this time. She of course wishes she had slimmed down before he turned her into a vampire.
Glory is even more tempted when the evil little demons give her that wish too. They tease and torment her with a size six body. Glory decides to make a deal of her own. She tells them that she’ll get someone whose soul is destined for Hell anyway and in exchange they’ll leave her and her friends alone for good. The demons realize that is the best they’re going to get and agree. They vanish for parts unknown, taking Glory’s size six with them. Now Glory must get the soul for Lucifer, make amends with her boyfriend and mentor an unlikely new vampire fledgling before time runs out.
I was excited to read the next installment in Gerry Bartlett’s Glory St. Clair series. While I might not have picked it up on my own, I’m so glad I’ve been introduced to it. With all of the vampire stories out there that are riddled with angst, teenagers and stick-thin vampire types, Glory is such a breath of fresh air. She is from a time when curves were the rage, gentlemen knew how to treat a woman and protect her. Yet Glory still remains a strong and independent woman. Even with curves, she still attracts good, honest men. Her only problem is choosing which one is right for her. Even with the temptations from the Devil himself, Glory remains true to her beliefs and to her friends. I can’t wait to see what Glory gets herself into next.
