Victoria De Montville is a rebel. In her youth, she was cast out for defying the laws of the city dwellers. Years later she is still defiant. She bows to no one and will stop at nothing in her quest to find a cure for the deadly signe virus that threatens her world.

Cameron Savage is also after a cure for the virus. He is a physician, double agent and crime fighter. As his secret alter ego The Phantom, Cameron is fighting corruption and the greed of men who are trying to exploit the people. He also intends to marry Victoria De Montville. It was her father’s wish.

There is no way that Victoria intends to marry Cameron Savage. She met him years earlier and did not like him one little bit. The man is a barbarian. Her father may have wanted her to marry him but she is not about to honor that wish. Her intention is not to submit to any man. She is independent and freedom loving. However when the mysterious Phantom saves her life, she begins to fall in love with the man in the mask. Why can’t Cameron be like the sensuous, gentle Phantom?

Undoubtedly the romance between Victoria and Cameron is the highlight of this book. That she is falling in love with Cameron without even realizing it is fun and sweet. When she does realize who the Phantom actually is Victoria is both angry and surprised. Has she actually fallen in love with the one man she despises?

I thought that both Victoria and Cameron are both rebels heart. She is so hell bent on living life on her own terms and fighting anyone who stands in her way. Whilst he is the true hero, fighting injustice on his own terms.

Rebel Heart is set in a future that is way beyond where we are living now. When I first read what year the story was set in I thought I would be reading about lots of robots. So it was a pleasant surprise that there were no robots in sight. Although a deadly virus threatens the world, basically human nature is the same – people fight to survive and love is still important. And in a lot of ways, I thought this book had an almost a medieval feel to it with escapes from towers and fighting for justice. I also like that the book does not answer all the questions of the future, and that life, even in the future, can not be neatly packaged up.

Rebel Heart is a swashbuckling, true romance. There is adventure, evil and intrigue. You want to hiss at the bad guys and you want the good guys to win and live happily ever after – exactly what you want in a book.
