William Jessup Brady was an outlaw in every sense of the word. There wasn’t a bank he wouldn’t rob or a man he wouldn’t fight. He finally decided to give up his unlawful ways when he met someone worth more to him than all the banks in the world. Sadly it was not written in the cards for Jess to know happiness and in a single betrayal, he lost everything including his life. His soul screamed for vengeance and was heard by an ancient Greek goddess. She gave him his life back and gave him the opportunity to have vengeance on the one who betrayed him. There was only one stipulation: Jess’s soul would be hers and he would from that day forward be one of her Dark Hunters ridding the world of the demons that preyed on humanity. Jess gladly accepted and went to even the score.
The story continues 130 years later to present day Las Vegas. This is the area that Jess has agreed to patrol for demons. These demons feed off of humans in order to stay alive, much like a vampire. He has been assigned a special case though. Dark Hunters are being killed and Jess is called in to hunt whoever it is down and take them out. Jess doesn’t realize it, but a specter of his past is about to smack him right in the face.
Abigail Yager was orphaned at a young age. She hid in her room as her parents were murdered by the one person she called a friend: Jess Brady. She was then taken in by a group of vampires and brought up believing that Dark Hunters were their enemy and to kill as many as she could. Abigail trained and learned from her new family and has managed to take out several of her enemies. Now she is bent on taking the life of the one man who has made her life what it is. She has located Jess and is determined to see him die by her hand. Jess has convince Abigail that he wasn’t the one who murdered her parents and find the real killer while exorcising the demons of his past.
I was so happy to see Sherrilyn Kenyon’s latest addition to her Dark Hunter series in my group of books to read. I’m always amazed by the wonderful stories Ms. Kenyon gives to her readers. The stories are all about redemption and finding a silver lining for those that are given the short end of the stick. I loved that she finally gave Jess his own story having been introduced to him in previous books. I like being able to see where a character has come from and what makes them tick and ultimately who is chosen to help them find that redemption. Jess and Abigail are two very stubborn; set in their ways kind of people and their attraction lights up the pages. They fight, curse and scream at each other but can’t seem to be able to let the other go. Ms. Kenyon does not disappoint in creating many twists and turns in this story and the ending is a sure fire winner in my book.
