Ruth Deville is returning to Deville’s Crossing some 30 years after she left. She swore she’d never return after that fateful night. However, she’s received a compelling anonymous summons and is on her way back. Once there, she meets up again with Brent and Jon, her two best buddies from high school. They, too, have been summoned home. They wonder if Sue Ellen (the fourth person in their group) has contacted them to come back. If so, why has she waited all these years after that fateful night.
As they work to put the past into the past, they realize they have to relive that night in order to get on with their futures. What did they really see---was Sue Ellen a loup-garou (werewolf) or was she the innocent victim of Brent, Jon & Ruth’s overactive imaginations?
During this stressful time of finding out why they have been called back, both Brent and Jon are trying to rekindle the old flame with Ruth. It gets a little sticky as she decides what she wants to do now that she’s an adult.
I found Return to Deville’s Crossing to have a suspenseful edge to it. The novella kept me on the edge of my seat off and on during the story. I thought Ms. Toombs did a fine job of telling the story. I thought some of the scenes felt a little forced, as though the purpose was to tell information, not spin a story. It was not a common occurrence during the book, so I did enjoy the story overall.
I thought the novella length was perfect for this story. It seemed like just the right length to tell this particular story. It was a fast read and while it kept me in suspense, I did find it to be fun and romantic as well.
