Lexi Johnsí primary goal is to free her best friend from her enemies. These are not just any ordinary enemies; they are the Sentinels. Lexi believes that they are out to destroy the human race and use us as their food source. She couldnít be more wrong about everything. Instead of her friend being the one that is brainwashed, Lexi has been led to believe that the Sentinels are evil monsters. She must decide who to believe before Zach finds her.

Zach is one of the Sentinels. The Sentinels are three races descended from ancient guardians of mankind. Their main goal is to save the human race from their enemies, the Synestryn. Zach must find Lexi and convince her that he is not the monster she was led to believe. His life and the fate of the human race depend on it. He takes her to his peopleís sanctuary in the hopes of getting her to see first hand that they are here to help humans.

When Zach finds Lexi, she has changed her name and appearance so as to better hide from the Sentinels. Zach is not deterred and insists that Lexi come with him back to his people. Lexi is not convinced he is the good guy he claims to be. She has been brought up to believe that he is the enemy and she is determined to fight tooth and nail not to be taken in by his good looks. Zach needs Lexi to trust him because she is the only hope to save him. Zach is dying. The tree tattoo on his chest has only one leaf left. When that leaf falls he will turn into the monster that has haunted Lexi.

This was such a dynamic book. I love the mythology of the Sentinel race and the wonderful imagery that Ms. Butcher displays in her story. I certainly found it hard to put down once I started reading it. As many of you know I love to read a great series from the first book through to the last book published. This is the first book in this series that I have read. It has enough background to wet the appetite so that the reader doesnít fall behind. This is the only reason I didnít give the book a five rating. Anyone looking for a knock down, action filled adventure should put this book on their to be read list.
