Picking up where the 1st book left off, the marshal, Luke Davis and his childhood sweetheart, Rachel Hamilton are about to be married. Shannon O’Neil and Leah Bennett were happy for Rachel. But how could such a happy occasion make two girls so miserable?

Shannon and Leah’s lives were drastically changed by those meddling Corbett brothers. Trying to help Luke get over Rachel, Luke’s cousins, Mark and Garrett never dreamed that more than one bride would answer their mail-order ad. When Luke and Rachel married that left two brides without grooms. The respectful thing to do is pay for room and board for the brides, but if they didn’t marry soon, Mark and Garrett would go broke. They need to find the brides a job or husband, and fast!

Garrett had the perfect solution for one of the brides – hire Shannon to work in the office of their freight business. Little did he know that Shannon had feelings for Mark and Mark had feelings for Shannon (though he didn’t know it yet). Mark also had secrets that kept him from acting on his feelings.

In the meantime, Leah was becoming desperate to find a job. She couldn’t go home – she had nowhere else to go. Circumstances brought her to help out the blacksmith, Dan Howard, and his mother. Dan has had eyes for Leah since she came to town and it doesn’t take long for Leah to see what a special man Dan is.

As always, secrets come out, circumstances change and feelings get hurt. How will God help Mark realize that he has to forgive himself as He’s forgiven him? Will Shannon be able to also forgive and realize that Mark really needs her? Will Leah and Dan work out their differences? How will both couples finally rely on God to lead them to the best He has for them?

Vickie McDonough has once again penned a cute story with inspirational reminders that God does have a plan for his children, though it may be hard for us to see how things will work out for good. I enjoyed meeting up with all the characters from The Anonymous Bride. This story gives more depth to these characters as they work together through various circumstances.

Second Chance Brides was a fast read as I couldn’t wait to see what would happen next. Maybe we’ll get a chance to see what becomes of Garrett in the next book of the Texas Boardinghouse Bride series. Lookout is a fine place to visit, I highly recommend it.
