Jack de Venezia is the son of the legendary Casanova. Sadly, all the women he has known and loved could not accept what he is---a vampire. He decides to leave Europe and come to the states to help Roman with the Malcontent problem. While at Roman’s, Jack throws a bachelor party for a friend and fellow vampire. The party starts to get a little out of hand and the police are called. Fortunately for Jack and his friends, they are able to control human minds and are not concerned their secret will get out.
Officer Lara Boucher is called to the scene and no matter what Jack does he cannot control her thoughts. Jack is captivated by Lara but tries to resist his feelings for her. He knows it could never work between them but he cannot deny what he feels. Lara is cautious around him but knows she cannot deny her attraction to him. Lara is called in on a missing person’s case that seems very suspicious. All of the girls that are missing are young and have red hair just like Lara. Could Jack be involved? She wonders what other secrets he is keeping and will she be able to handle them?
This is another great book by Kerrelyn Sparks. I could not put this book down at all and was a little disappointed when I realized the story was over. Jack is just a great character (I almost wish I could take him home.). He has an old world charm that makes a woman’s heart swell and he’s definitely a charmer. Lara is another strong character. Too often I read romance books where the women are damsels in distress and can’t hold their own. That’s why I love these books. Kerrelyn’s female characters are strong-willed, fiery and can hold their own with the men. I definitely recommend getting the whole Love at Stake series. They are a must have in any library.
