Marylee Simson lives through the heartbreak of losing her parents as a little girl. To be honest, she doesn’t even remember her parents, but she does remember them not being there. Marylee is raised by her aunt in Portland, Oregon and had a childhood that was okay but there was always something missing. When her aunt was dying from cancer, she talked a bit about Burlington but only from the standpoint of telling Marylee never to return there.

After her aunt’s death, Marylee finds that she needs to find the truth; she needs to get closer to her past. She relocates to the area she believes she is from and purchases a crafting store. She begins giving classes to the folks in the community and her most popular (with her students and within herself) is her mirror mosaic class. She continually has dreams surrounding mirrors which she doesn’t understand.

Once there she begins to ask questions and show the one thing she has linking to her past – a picture of her parents. Imagine her surprise when one of her students recognizes the picture from a magazine advertisement. What is the truth? She needs some help to figure out the picture and whether or not it has been altered and she turns to photographer Evan Baxter. Even there though, strange things begin happening.

Linda Hall has created a clever story of intrigue and loss. The loss comes in from the fact that a little girl was left hurting and grew up with a void she wanted to fill. She wants to know so much more about where she came from. However, Linda uses the quest into her past to help Marylee discover who she is. There were a few times I have to admit I had some trouble following our hero, Evan, through his role but I did enjoy the character she created and he lends himself well to the intrigue woven through the story.

I also have to admit I didn’t even begin to get a clue as to what turn would constitute the ending until the last chapter. Very well done.
