Gabriel, a born vampire, wants revenge on his father, who he blames for a lot of his pain. In order to get closer to his father, Gabriel creates a fledgling vampire, Jezebel, and sends her to his father as a spy. Gabriel finds more than he expected in Jezebel, and unfortunately, danger lurks in the form of Gabriel's mother and an old enemy with vengeance on his mind.
Talk about tortured characters! Gabriel and Jezebel have had very painful pasts and are trying to come to terms with those pasts. Unfortunately, Gabriel's thirst for revenge is a great obstacle in the way of his continued growth. However, with Jezebel's help, Gabriel overcomes his thirst for revenge and finds the thing that he has always longed for--love. At first, I was unsure how Gabriel would be redeemed, but it soon became evident that he was a tortured, misunderstood hero. Jezebel is just the heroine that Gabriel needs, because she, too, has known great pain and understands him so well. Shadows on the Soul is an awe-inspiring dark, vampire romance with tortured characters and an exciting plot. I highly recommend it.
